Memorize & Ponder for Sunday June 22, 2014

Sidney Chang preaching

Mark 9:38-40   (NRSV)

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone
casting out demons in your name,
and we tried to stop him,
because he was not following us.”
But Jesus said, “Do not stop him;
for no one who does a deed of power in my name
will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me.
Whoever is not against us is for us.”

Throughout 2014, the Christian community at Brentwood Presbyterian Church is getting to know Jesus, the Christ, in a refreshing and transformative way. We invite you to listen for what the Spirit is saying in the text, then question how those insights might change the ways you see things and act in the world. Share your thoughts during the week on the meaning the Spirit creates for you in this text by posting a comment here.

A Provocative Pondering

We welcome to our pulpit on June 22, 2014, Sidney Chang. Sidney has been minister with Burnaby Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, who share our facilities, for the past two years. At the end of June, he finishes his term with them and retires to Langley.

We look forward to ways Sidney will provoke us to understand and live out this text next Sunday.

Sidney has served The Presbyterian Church in Canada with considerable distinction in Ontario, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, and now in British Columbia. He has been a very helpful interpreter of the two congregations to each other. Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a multi-ethnic neighbourhood church working and witnessing in English. Burnaby Taiwanese Presbyterian Church is a uni-ethnic regional church working and witnessing in Taiwanese and Mandarin. These two very different congregations share Brentwood’s space. Both serve the Gospel in legitimate, though distinct, ways.

We wish Sidney and Sherri God’s richest blessings as they enter this next phase of their life in Jesus Christ.

Join us in our study groups and worship services to ponder together what the Spirit is teaching us through this text.
